Data Description:

Infant mortality data are a subset of death data for Texas residents under one year of age who died in Texas or out-of-state. Each death certificate identifies a single underlying cause of death that is defined as the disease or injury which initiated the chain of events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury. Infant mortality statistics are tabulated to the NCHS List of 130 Selected Causes of Infant Death and the 71 causes eligible to be ranked as leading causes of infant death.

Measure Information:

The figures above are presented in three age groupings. "Infant Deaths: Total" is the number of deaths among individuals less than one year of age. Neonate deaths comprise deaths among infants less than 28 days of age. Postneonate deaths comprise deaths among infants at least 28 days of age but less than one year of age.
