Data Source: Texas Vital Statistics (VSTAT)
Infant mortality data are a subset of death data for Texas residents under 1 year of age who died in Texas and out-of-state. Each death certificate identifies a single underlying cause of death that is defined as the disease or injury which initiated the train of events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury. Infant mortality statistics are tabulated to the NCHS Lists of 71 leading causes of death and 130 selected causes of infant death.
Limitations of the dataset
For 2012 onward, race/ethnicity classifications changed, reclassifying all multi-race individuals as "Other". The effects of this change are minimal on final rates, but may be observed for certain death causes in the Other and Black categories.
