Data Description

Infant death data come from a subset of death data for Texas residents under 1 year of age who died in Texas and out-of-state. Each death certificate identifies a single underlying cause of death that is defined as the disease or injury that initiated the events resulting in death. Infant death data are tabulated to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) List of 71 Rankable Causes of Infant Death. This dashboard contains bridged race/ethnicity categories.

For 2005 onward, race/ethnicity classifications changed. The effects of this change are minimal on final rates, but may be observed for certain death causes in certain categories.

Measure Information

Causes of death are aggregated based on predefined lists of cause-of-death categories developed by National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) for tabulating mortality statistics. The top ten causes of death and causes of death presented in the table refer to the NCHS List of 71 Rankable Causes of Infant Death: ICD-10 Cause-of-Death Lists for Tabulating Mortality Statistics. This dashboard suppresses low counts with “—”. In the table, if a certain selection of row variables has no counts, that row will not show.
