Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)

Data Description

Texas PRAMS is a survey that collects data from Texas mothers who recently had a live birth. The survey asks mothers about their experiences before, during, and after pregnancy. Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) conducts the survey with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Texas PRAMS provides population-based data on the health and behaviors of new mothers in Texas.

Every month, Texas PRAMS randomly selects 200 to 300 Texas resident mothers 61 to 183 days after the birth of their baby with a home address in Texas. Mothers can complete the survey through mail, web, or telephone.

All percentages are based on weighted data.

Measure Information

This dashboard reports Texas PRAMS data in aggregate of two years. This is because Texas PRAMS has not met the CDC response rate threshold since 2016, so single-year estimates may not be reliable or representative of all Texas women giving birth.

Confidence Interval (CI): Percentages are weighted to represent the population of all Texas mothers who recently gave birth. The dashboard reports percentages with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals. A 95% confidence interval is a range of numbers with a lower confidence level (CL) and an upper CL. This range has a 95% chance of containing the true population percentage being estimated. Smaller ranges mean the estimate is more precise while larger ranges mean the estimate is less precise. DSHS recommends reporting all PRAMS percentages with their 95% confidence interval.

Race and Ethnicity: Race or ethnicity information shown in the dashboard refers to the mother, not the infant. Women who identified themselves as Hispanic were classified as Hispanic regardless of race. Women who did not identify as Hispanic were classified as non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, or non-Hispanic Other. The non-Hispanic Other category includes Native American, Asian, or multiracial.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC): WIC is a nutrition program for pregnant, breastfeeding women and families with children younger than 5.
