Data Source
The Texas Poison Center Network (TPCN) is a network of six regional poison centers that provides emergency treatment information to the citizens of Texas for poisonings or toxic exposures via a 24-hour, toll-free hotline. TPNC provides help to both the lay public and health care providers. If necessary, callers may be referred to the nearest hospital to assist in the person's initial treatment and follow-up care.
Substance Information
The graphs and tables show information for cannabinoid-related calls in Texas to the Texas Poison Centers. Cannabinoids include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (VBD), and synthetic marijuana. THC is the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana that gives the "high". CBD is the other common active chemical in marijuana but does not give a "high".
Substance information for this module was derived from unique cannabinoid substance exposure calls to the Texas Poison Center Network (TPCN) during 2012-2024. 2024 numbers are updated on the first Monday of each month. Cannabinoid-related exposures were identified using substance/product codes designating cannabinoids. This module includes only those calls involving cannabinoid exposures; calls asking for information were not included.
Map Information
The map shows the estimated population for each county by year. This information comes from the Texas Demographic Center annual estimates. The estimates are used to calculate the population rates, which estimates the number of exposures for the county based on the number of calls to the poison center and population estimates for that year.
County is from the TPCN data field "Caller COunty" which is the physical location of the person who calls the Poison Center. For calls from health care facilities this will be the county in which the facility is located
For this reason, the field county is only approcimation of the number of exposures that happen in the actual county. It is not nexessarily where the exposure happened or where the patient lives.
